Advantages of Running

Published on 14 September 2024 at 21:48

Many kids our age detest running. Personally, I don't! Whilst I am by no means a "Fast" or "Excellent" runner, I do enjoy it. Today, I'm going to share the benefits associated with running, and try to convince you to start running.

  • Running increases longevity. Even running for five to ten minutes a day can add 3-4 years on to your lifespan. I'm not sure about you, but I'll take any extra years I can get! In recent studies, it is shown that running, even if just once a week, can increase your lifespan.
  • Running can decrease the risk of heart illnesses. Running helps to improve the condition of the blood vessels and the heart. Many athletes have a slower heartrate during exercise, while each heartbeat pumps more blood than those who are out of shape.
  • Running can improve sleep patterns. Your body needs sleep to fully rest and recover and is at a much stronger state with higher quality sleep. When humans are stressed, we release cortisol, which prevents us from sleeping. Running is proven to lower stress levels and help decrease cortisol. Running also burns energy, making you feel tired.
  • Running improves mood and mental health. While yes running is painful, it will eventually make you happier.
  • Running also reduces blood pressure. It was once thought that only intense exercise can lower blood pressure, but it has since been found that any form of exercise can do so.
  • Running strengthens bones and muscles. Since running is a weight bearing exercise, it helps to strengthen your bones and muscles. This means that running can help reduce risk of injuries and improve your posture.
  • Running is a cheap form of exercise and can be done nearly everywhere.
  • Running will increase your energy levels. Running gets your blood flowing and heartrate up, which can give you energy boosts.

Disadvantages of Running

Though the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, you should be aware of challenges and struggles you may face while running.

  • Running can be hard on your joints. Running is a weight bearing exercise and can put stress on your joints.
  • Running in hot weather can be dangerous, as you may overheat. Make sure to stay hydrated!
  • Running is a hard habit to keep up. It will be extremely challenging for the first several weeks and months, until you get into the grove of running.
  • Runners risk injuries if they do not use proper form of correctly warm up.

Tips for running

If you do choose to run, there are a few things you must know.

  • Have fun and don't push yourself harder than you can go in the beginning. Build up your fitness gradually.
  • Make sure to have a good pair of running shoes!
  • Take rest days. Your body will need time to rest and fully recover after intense cardio.
  • Don't forget too properly warm up!
  • Keep consistent to build a running habit.
